Three Ways to Celebrate the Holidays Responsibly

This holiday season you may have some time off from work, plans with your family and friends, parties and celebrating to do. Enjoy it! But remember, it’s easy to overdo it in the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Mistakes come easy if you’re drinking too much, and all that holiday merriment can quickly end.

Challenge yourself to drink responsibly this holiday season.

1. Pick a designated driver.
With a bunch of holiday events coming up, plan to take turns with your buddies being a designated driver (DD). You’ll all have a better time without worrying about how to get home safely.

2. Decide how many drinks you’ll have when you go out.
Make a plan and stick to it. Think about how long you’ll be somewhere and decide how many drinks you’ll have. Avoid binge drinking and stick to no more than one alcoholic drink per hour. Commit to having a non-alcoholic drink in between alcoholic drinks to stay hydrated and keep your hands full. Try something festive, like a seltzer with ice, cranberry juice and a lime wedge.

3. Check in with yourself.
Did you go to this holiday party to embarrass yourself? Or did you go to have fun and be with your friends? You’re a person of integrity and are stronger than any peer pressure that comes your way. Prepare for different ways to say no and stick to your goals. Have an answer ready when someone tries to persuade you with another drink.

If you try to cut back and have a hard time, it may be time to ask for help.
